Off to Israel
— Saturday, December 27th, 2008 —
We’re in the Louisville airport now, waiting to leave for Israel. As we do, I want to qualify that “Israel” in this context is simply what the Apostle Paul would call “Israel according to the flesh.”
I am thankful that the Israel of God isn’t a “where” or a “what” but a “Who.”
I’m looking forward [...]

PerhapsĀ as you read this, if the Lord wills, I’ll be on an airplane bound for Israel. Forty or so Southern Seminary students and friends will be tromping around Galilee, Jerusalem, and other locales with Professor Bill Cook and me for the next eight days or so.
During that time, there’ll be some exciting [...]

“I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob;
I will gather the remnant of Israel;
I will set them together
like sheep in a fold,
like a flock in its pasture,
a noisy multitude of men.”

— Wednesday, December 17th, 2008 —
Christopher Hitchens has to be one of the most miserable human beings on the planet. Still and all, one never need wonder precisely what he thinks. In an essay today denouncing Christmas, he turns his attention, if only for a moment, to the “red letter Christian” movement. Of a recent review in the [...]

Some commenters on the last post have raised the issue of “time out” as a tool for discipline, especially in light of my statement that extended periods of “time out” don’t communicate well the discipline of God over his children.
Some asked, “What about the exile?” Others noted, “Since godly parenting demonstrates belief in hell, [...]

Yesterday I helped a toddler clean up a 44 ounce cup of Coke Zero he’d spilled everywhere (yes, it was mine; and no, there were not 44 ounces left remaining in it when he found it). I answered forty questions about whether Jesus made Lego blocksĀ (so stay tuned for my new sermon series on [...]

— Monday, December 8th, 2008 —
Last night I spoke at one of my favorite churches (non-Highview, that is), Living Hope Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky. While there, I was presented with this piece by Richard Carwile, adult discipleship pastor there, on behalf of the pastoral staff team.
Who knew they [...]

— Sunday, December 7th, 2008 —
Ross Douthat heroically engages the attempt to blame the meltdown of the Republican Party on pro-lifers. In an op-ed in this morning’s New York Times, Douthat quotes from a litany of country club GOP voices, all saying a similar thing: the Republicans would’ve been able to win the mainstream if not for those [...]

I really appreciate the worship music produced of late by Sojourn Community Church here in Louisville. Their song, “We Are Listening” from the album “Before the Throne” is in my top ten songs listened to, according to the counter on my iPod (numbers 1-9 are a different story altogether).
The Sojourn folks have put [...]
