[...] From Russell Moore It sure helps to love invisible people. That’s why one rattles on and on about “The Family” while neglecting his kids. That’s why another “fights” for “social justice” by “raising consciousness” about “The Poor” while judging his friends on how trendy their clothes are. And that’s why one pontificates on “The Church” while rolling his eyes at the people in his actual congregation. [...]

Great article, Dr. Moore. Your points hit me especially well in my own experiences with the pro-life movement. I try to speak out against abortion, and to speak with compassion for the mothers, but I find that such speaking is a lot easier than giving myself away for specific mothers who need love and mercy. That is the much harder task and probably one that will have even more important consequences than my simply going off about the evils of abortion. Thanks again.

When on a work-based course when I was young, I shared a room for four nights with a young man who told me that he hated religion and was a communist. I listened to this, very argumentative, guy tell me over and over that communism was the only way to ensure universal happiness. We argued from Monday night until Thursday night. I was not particularly religious at the time but I suddenly found myself, on that last night saying - You want to make everyone in the world happy with someone else's money but you make your mother, your father and girlfriend unhappy all the time for free (I didn't even know he had a girlfriend) and they are the only people you have the power to make happy. When you have made them happy, then go make the rest of the world happy - he didn't argue back for the first time in a week, sat down, looked very sad and said - You're right. (Somebody was giving me good advice too, I was just as guilty).

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought Jesus came to earth to die for sinners not to be repulsed by them? It was the self proclaimed righteous, those who point out others sins while ignoring their own, that repulsed him. There is way too much judgment on this post and replies for my Biblical sense.

Good insight Dr. Moore. A friend and I were talking the other day in Sunday school, and we were talking about how that sinners can be repulsive to a Christian person with their lifestyle. However, a moment later we observed that had Jesus refused to associate with those who offended Him, He could never have come to Earth, He could have not had disciples, or healed people, or showed love to lost sheep and goats, or died on the Cross. Your post demonstrates a real problem with many of America's moral crusaders--they aren't willing to die to their own righteousness that they might live in God's way and reconcile the world. I'll be thinking and praying about this a lot.

Thanks

Point well taken... Everything starts with me; a true leader leads by example. How many times does that need to be said before the Church practices it? I hope to find out soon, as I'm beginning to implement it (long story) so I don't contradict myself.

"'Be warmed and filled' is advocacy; 'get in here' is love."

Wow. You hit the nail there. This is a convicting post, to say the least. Reminds me of the old poem,

"To live above, with the saints I love
That indeed will be glory.

Living below with the saints I know?
Now that's a different story!"

Theory is so much easier than practice...but it's practice that shows the true condition of our hearts.

Much to chew on here. Thanks so much.
