@BrettR, (and others), "Song of the South" is the obvious answer, but Disney's history of racialized stereotypes extends much further--think of the dancing, jive-talkin' blackbirds in "Dumbo;" the hyenas (not to mention Scar--he's evil, so naturally he's dark-complected?) in "Lion King;" the anti-Semitism in the portrayal of Hades in "Hercules," etc, etc. @Kim, it's easy to appreciate things "in their historical contexts" when you're not part of a group that's been historically and systematically oppressed by symbolic representations in popular culture.

@BrettR,

Definitely he is referring to Song of the South, though I don't see why Disney needs to be embarrassed about it, personally. We've become so PC we can't appreciate anything in its historical context. They should be more embarrassed that they haven't had an African-American princess before now!

@BrettR,
Br'er Rabbit? "Song of the South"? If you're a youngster (under 40) this is one you might have missed?

@BrettR, The move in question is no doubt Song of the South, which Disney has never released in its entirety on DVD or home video due to concerns that it is racially insensitive, etc.

@Stephanie J., I think, depending on your children and your conscience, it'd be okay to take them as long as you talk them through what's happening in the movie, with a different take on it all. It could be a good time of training them how to recognize something of the "wisdom of this age" while weighing it against the truth as it is in Jesus.

Thank you for your review...I've been searching to find insightful reviews of this movie, as I am a mommy to two young girlies who just would love to see this movie. I too, was happy that Disney finally offered little African American girls their own "princess". In fact, my daughter's best friend (who moved away last) "looks just like Maddie, Mommy!" It's good for MY non-AA girls to see a "Princess" in this light, as well.

But I too am worried about the voodoo aspect, especially when it has been so "lightened up" and made palatable. Honestly, if there had been no "good" voodoo practitioner, I might have considered taking them.

What movie is Disney embarrassed about for its caricatures? It seems like your point is based on an empty assertion without stating the example.

Good and accurate review otherwise.
