Along those same lines, what about job change? Some of us simply cannot live in the same city - and may not live even close - as family due to the lack of jobs. That's a tough spot.

How do we mesh this with the call to leave everything and follow Christ? Family is important, but most of the people who read this blog have left their families for the Gospel, not because a cooler college was farther away. I can see thinking like this turning quickly into a new version of the "Burying My Father" excuse. How can we tell honoring our family from making excuses in those we pastor?

Missionaries very much understand this but trust that somehow God works out those special relationships. It takes effort with regular calls, videos, photos, and visits. Serving God involves sacrifice and tears sometimes.

Thanks to Dr. Moore for expressing this sentiment. I grew up within an hour of both sets of my grandparents and my grandfather even lived with us for a while before he died. My wife lived all of her life until eighteen in the same town with both sets of her grandparents and within twenty minutes of some of her great-grandparents.

Now, being in the ministry and being called to seminary, I lament the fact that my kids see my parents (who live 2.5 hours away) about once every two months and my wife's parents (who live 5.5 hours away) a handful of times a year. What's more, as I pursue becoming a seminary professor, there are precious few reasons for me to return to Oklahoma where we can be nearer to them.

We praise God that we get to see our families as often as we do, but I echo your lament that "over the river and through the woods" has turned into "onto the turnpike and across two states."
