For me, its the smell of tar. My father was a roofer for most of my childhood and everytime I get the slightest scent I am taken back to the days when he would come home and I would run to get a hug from him. His entire car had that odor. He has been gone for 9 years now and driving through a construction zone where repaving a road is being done causes a torrential downpour of tears. It's amazing how a smell can cause such emotion!

I have never smoked, nor do I ever intend to. Furthermore, my parents never smoked, and I can't stand to sit by a smoker in a restaurant. All of that said, I love to get a whiff of a cigarette smoke in passing. It reminds me of Saturday mornings at the bowling alley when my dad and I bowled in a father/daughter league.

As a pastor's wife of 20+ years, I love the smell of small rural churches. It's a combination of mold and furniture polish. Not that I really want to go back to our first church, but it does remind me of our newlywed days. Youthful zeal and two babies instead of five pre-adults.

Ah, nostalgia... And by the way, I was born in 1970 and I also love the smell of Vapo Rub.

I know this isn't exactly a Mother's Day nostalgia sort of smell, but I heard on the radio today that White Castle is selling a White Castle Hamburger scented candle to celebrate National Hamburger Month.
