I am also prone to engage in what I call "Christian Magic", or the attempt to get God to effect some outcome by following a pseudo-Scriptural formula for righteous living.

For myself, it's not that I ask "Has God really said?", but that I know exactly what His will is for me, and I don't want it. I know that God is going to provide, but that He's going to give me manna, when what I want is meat.

You gave me a view into your mind with the article. It introduces a deeper perspective on what motivates most to pray. Much prayer is based upon getting relief from some troubling situation. I was blessed to minister with T. W. Hunt as we began our ministries together in June 1987 with LifeWay Christian Resources. On one of our lunches in LifeWay cafeteria we discussed this subject. Many do not actually connect with the Holy Spirit when they pray. How sad!

I just read your piece on closed Communion at Touchstone and there was no place to reply. All I will say is that after making baptism by immersion a requirement for a valid baptism, I hope that the elements which make your protected Communion do not include grape juice!

As one who also struggles with worry, I want to thank you for your transparency. I find it helps to know that we're not alone in our struggles. It's not just me and Jesus; we're on a caravan on our journey towards wholeness in Christ.

Perfect, perfect timing! I especially loved the idea of "falling back in your Father's power and wisdom"--or falling forward, as I envision it. It's very much like the scene where Indiana Jones crosses the bridge "only by faith." My anxiety has been in seeing that "no one can jump this," but your words here have called out my responsible worry and given it its proper name. I'm letting go and stepping forward. THANK YOU!

PS 'Scuse all the Indy references. It just needed to be said. ;)

Thank you so much. I really needed to hear this. And my friend just sent me a text as I was reading this:

Psalm 27:13-14
13 I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living!
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!

Tying in perfectly with this and Joshua 1 from my reading last night. Glorious display of sovereign providence!
