Just this week, I have been thinking about how Jesus lived in the flesh without being sinful. I have to admit to falling too often into the realm of deifying Jesus' humanity subconsciously imagining Jesus as somehow living in a supra-human body.

But this is heresy to believe in that kind of Jesus

Jesus cried, got angry, bled, scrapped his knee, got infections, shed skin cells, and got dirty.

I would recommend another book to supplement this topic.

[...] The Humanity of Christ Matters - It just doesn’t seem right to us to imagine Jesus feverish or vomiting or crying in a feeding trough or studying to learn his Hebrew. From the very beginning of the Christian era, those who sought to redefine the gospel argued that it doesn’t seem right to think of Jesus as really flesh and bone, filled with blood and intestines and urine. It doesn’t seem right to think of Jesus as growing in wisdom and knowledge, as Luke tells us he did. Somehow such things seem to us to detract from his deity, from his dignity. – Russell Moore [...]

I have noticed a lot of books out there, written to reconstruct and reaffirm the humanity of Jesus without denying His divinity. As followers, we need to believe in His humanity so that we can realize truly following His example is possible for us. God created humans to be in His image. When Jesus walked the earth, He showed us what humanity should have been all along without sin.

I've long been comfortable with the notion that Jesus had to defecate and urinate just like everyone else, starting with changing those swaddling cloths in the manger. But I can really appreciate your story about the stomach bug and how it brought home the idea that Jesus shared our humanity in all aspects.

Thanks for these wonderful insights.

Tim

P.S. Are Jesus' hands spike-scabbed or spike-scarred?

This is so great Dr. Moore. Thanks for this reminder. For so long my view was inept; I didn't recognize that Jesus IS TODAY the same King who will one day rend the sky and return mightily for His people. That is a correct and majestic view, but does have the tendency to remove His humanity from Him. Balance is key.
