Thanks Dr. Moore for the article on Kitty Wells. I met her in Nashville back in '94; she and Johnny both autographed my guitar. She had "couth." Thanks again!

[...] Russell Moore comments on the passing of Kitty Moore, Queen of Country Music. An excerpt: Wells is most famous, of course, for the song “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels.” The song made history because it was a response, from a woman’s perspective, to Hank Thompson’s hit “Wild Side of Life.” In his song, Thompson cynically berates his ex-wife who left him. He should have known, he sings, that she’d “never made a wife.” She was instead a “honky-tonk angel,” predestined to be unfaithful to him. [...]

Jen, your definition of a feminist would be approved by Humpty Dumpty. But it's not useful for communication purposes simply to grab a word, shear off its connotations and common usage, and announce you believe in your own version.

Here is the working definition of feminism that I am more than willing to call myself, but it is not yet full realized worldwide:

1) The right of women to own their own property.
2) The right of women to vote in elections.
3) The right of women to inherit and not have it taken away by a male relative.
4) The right of women to have their own passport and choose to enter and exit a country without first getting the permission of male relatives.
5) The right of women to have access to education and to be literate.
6) The right of women to choose their own marriage partner and not be forced into a marriage by male relatives.
7) The right of women to be able to attain higher education if they so choose.

While these may seem like everyday things in the US, they are still not taken for granted worldwide. By the above definition, I am a feminist. Nothing wrong with that word.

p.s. Dr. Moore, good to have you back in blog-land, hope the student trip to Rome was good.

Russell,

I had read several of the news reports about her death and they all labelled her as a feminist, which I was a bit surprised about. She did not seem to fit the definition of feminist and your article help to clarify that her life did not show that she was. Now I will have to link your article on my blog as a response to the other articles who have labelled her in this fashion.

[...] The Complementarian Vision of Kitty Wells Russel D. Moore, Moore to the Point Wells’ voice was new, and it led to a similar form of female protest songs that shows up in Loretta Lynn’s lyrics against womanizing, drunkenness, and abandoning a wife at home with the children while the husband raises hell out with his buddies. So, yes, if by “feminism” you mean the idea that women bear dignity and respect, then, yes, Kitty Wells fits the bill. Leave a Reply Click here to cancel reply.
