Thank you for this clear explanation of why Christians shouldn't sue one another: "...they are signaling to the outside world that the church is incompetent, not gifted by Christ, to settle disputes among brothers. That is a defective eschatology, and ultimately says something profoundly untrue about Christ and his gospel..."

I left a church (and ultimately, a denomination that became two denominations) when a new bishop turned a property dispute, under promising internal negotiation, into a secular lawsuit. Well, after years of distraction, the courts ruled that the bishop "won" and the congregation "lost." But the congregation is finding ways to engage the community and serve it from the middle school where it meets, while the bishop's new church plant is struggling to maintain a centuries-old building that no longer serves the lost and needy the way it used to. Paul asks "isn't it better to be cheated?" In this case, it would have been.

So the Caesar is not to judge the Christians?. And thus a Christian state must be theocratic?.

!Perhaps this is only meant as advice?

Unfortunately, many churches are "incompetent" to settle disputes among brothers. Some churches have violated copyright laws, others have intentionally concealed child abuse, and still others ignore the labor laws of their cities and states. Any organization (including the church) or individual (including Christians) that ignore the law should be held accountable to both criminal and civil court. To state that all lawsuits involving Christians or churches are a violation of Jn. 18:36 and 1 Cor. 5:12-13 is to imply more than what the context of these too passages merit. JDY

"That said, you must examine your motives."

There's the nasty battleground, isn't it.

Good teaching brother. Thanks for the post.
