One Thing You Missed: Kanye West, Johnny Cash, and the Meaning of Evangelical

When people think of Johnny Cash, they may not see a link to Kanye West. However, both of these artists have been on my mind lately because of the conversation around Kanye’s recent conversion. A celebrity’s conversion, whether Kanye West, Johnny Cash, or the novelist Anne Rice, can so often reveal the best and worst of evangelical Christianity. We should not confuse the influence of Kanye with the power of the gospel. Rather, we should be hopeful about such conversion stories, and always excited about the best thing that has happened in Kanye’s life or any believer’s life.

Only when we see how lost we are, we can find our way again. Only when we bury what’s dead can we experience life again. Only when we lose our religion can we be amazed by grace again.
