One Thing You Missed: On Tacky Christmas Sweaters, Fear, and Cynicism

Years ago, David Foster Wallace warned us about the dangers of cynicism and our natural impulses toward self-protection. As we come to the end of the decade, one of the things we notice as we look back is the coarsening of discourse in American life, and the pervading sense of cynicism that has come to define modern life. I think there is a reason for all of this, and it actually relates to Christmas.

Only when we see how lost we are, we can find our way again. Only when we bury what’s dead can we experience life again. Only when we lose our religion can we be amazed by grace again.
